For our latest Warzone Box, we’ve chosen a location with a significant place in British military history: Goose Green, Falkland Islands.
The Falklands conflict took place before our time, but its legacy remains an important part of British military heritage. The places associated with the campaign, and the people who served there, continue to be remembered by generations that followed. For us, there is also a family connection, with members of the wider family having served in the airborne forces and deployed to the Falklands in 1982. While we were not there and would never claim a first-hand connection to those events, that link made Goose Green feel like a fitting location to explore through the Warzone Series.
Why Goose Green?
Goose Green is one of the most recognisable locations associated with the 1982 Falklands conflict. It is particularly connected with the fighting that took place there and the role of British airborne forces during the campaign, making it a location with a well-established place in military history.
However, it wasn’t simply the history that made us choose Goose Green. The landscape of the Falkland Islands is equally important to the story. Unlike many of the environments commonly associated with modern military operations, the Falklands are characterised by wide open ground, exposed coastline, rugged terrain and a climate that can be particularly unforgiving.
That environment played an important role in the experience of those who served there, and it is something we wanted the box to reflect. Rather than simply taking a military theme and applying it to the packaging, the aim with the Warzone Series is to start with a real location and allow its geography and character to influence the design.
Bringing the Location to the Box
With Goose Green, the landscape itself becomes a major part of the design. The open terrain and distinctive geography of the Falkland Islands give the box a visual identity that is directly connected to the place it represents.
This is something we’ve tried to maintain throughout the Warzone Series. Each location has its own character, and by using the actual geography of these places, we can create something that feels more meaningful than a generic military-inspired design.
For us, that is what makes the series interesting. The box is not just representing a military subject; it is representing a particular place and the history associated with it.
Remembering the History
The Warzone Series has never been intended to glorify conflict. Instead, it is about recognising the locations that have played a part in military history and exploring the stories, landscapes and legacies connected to them.
Goose Green is a particularly interesting example because the events of 1982 are now more than four decades in the past, yet the location remains closely associated with the people and events of the Falklands campaign. For those who served, their families, and the wider communities connected to them, that history continues to hold significance.
Our connection is naturally that of a generation that came afterwards, but that is also part of why we feel it is important to keep these places remembered. The Warzone Series gives us an opportunity to take a real location from military history and present it through something new, while remaining focused on the place itself and the story behind it.
The Goose Green Warzone Box
For this box, we wanted the Falkland landscape to do much of the talking. The terrain, the open ground and the distinctive environment of Goose Green all help tell the story of a location that became an important part of the 1982 campaign.
It is another example of what we are trying to achieve with the Warzone Series: taking real places with real histories and turning their geography into part of the product experience.
Goose Green is a location that carries a significant legacy, and we hope this box provides a small way of recognising that history while introducing the place to a new audience.
